Great Soma

What Was Som (सोम)?

In the ancient Vedic hymns, Som (सोम) is celebrated as the divine elixir of life and consciousness — the source of energy that sustains all living beings. After deep contemplation, we arrive at the understanding that Som is the primal life essence, present within all creatures, plants, and even the cosmic waves that carry energy across space.

Som as the Primal Liquid of Life

Som can be envisioned as the protoplasmic liquid of every living cell — the subtle medium where life’s energy flows. It is predominantly liquid in form, with water as its main ingredient, yet enriched with mysterious chemical elements and energies that awaken prana (life-force) in all beings.

Presence of Som Everywhere

Som is found in the bloodstreams of living beings, circulating as the carrier of both oxygen and energy. In the extracts of plants, Som manifests as vital sap, the living juice that sustains growth and healing. Even in inanimate matter, there are traces of Som-like energy, for life’s potential lies dormant in the atoms and waves of the cosmos.

Som and Cosmic Energy

Beyond the physical, Som extends into the fabric of space itself, existing as waves of energy that connect every corner of the universe. This cosmic Som radiates as light, sound, and subtle vibrations, feeding the consciousness that pervades all forms of existence.

Som and Divine Order

The Lord — the supreme intelligence — runs the universe with Som as the medium of energy and consciousness. Every living soul, plant, and even celestial body derives its energy and awareness from this eternal source.

Modern Perspective on Som

If we view Som through a scientific lens, it can be related to biological energy systems, like ATP in cells, or quantum energy, the unbroken field that links the microcosm and macrocosm. Just as ancient rishis drank Som to enter states of divine vision, today we seek inner Som through meditation, where we drink the nectar of bliss (Amrit) within our own consciousness.
